just bought a lancaster 3000 rod (costed £5000), first time i used it, it was taken under by a 30lb carp.

(1)
(1)

U would think some1 who spends £5000 on a rod would have the basic knowledge to use his drag and clutch system on the reel!?

I smell b/s here! I've never heard of a "lancaster 3000" rod or any rod costing 5 grand. I think we have a sad, lonely dreamer on our pages, guys. It wouldn't surprise me if this same saddo posted the ones below about eating the carp he caught. Get a life, fella!

If you did that you're not a true angler! Every coarse fish should be returned safely to fight another day. You should be ashamed, hope it gives you the squitters!

hi guys,

i used to fish loads wen i was a bairn with the old man .....mainly just up loch earn, luchnig etc. mainly for trout using swim feeders and spinners so all pretty basic. used to spin also of the rocks at mcinroy point at gourock for pollok n mackrel....

any way that was all years ago, im looking to get back into the sport but have nothing and limited knowledge. Im quite interested in learning to fish for pike around the glasgow area.

looking for advice on what gear to get in (within a reasonable budget) and suggestions of where to go would be much appreciated.

Cheers guys
Del

Alright Del, Well for fishing Equipment just head to Glasgow angling Centre and say what u want to fish for and your Budget...they will set u up no problem. (i cant see past Wychwood) as for fishing spots around glasgow...well there is many! Best place to start would be the canal. The basin behind Partick Thistles ground being good. there is also Barrhead Dams. If u are just getting started on pike fishing u had best go with some1 who fishes for them and knows how to handle them, as unhooking them could be a scary for some1 with no knowledge on how to get around the teeth!

It's hard not to laugh if you see someone fall in, isn't it? (Obviously, not if it gets serious!) Tell you what I saw last year on one of my local lakes - this right "smart arse" catching fish when no-one else was & really gloating about it. He was telling everyone how much his new pole cost, how many matches he'd won etc. He was really annoying everyone. He then hooked into a big carp & everyone groaned as he started bragging while he played the fish. Then, for some reason, he pointed his pole at the fish when it made a run. Out popped the top section of his pole & skimmed across the top of the lake as the fish escaped! I looked down the bank & you could see everyone trying not to laugh out loud - it was brilliant!

Hi Pal, You're right about me being an Evertonian, my Dad's family are Scousers from Scotty Road area. However, I now live near Preston, so it's probably a bit out of the way for you! It might be worth you going onto Google & trying "day ticket fisheries Liverpool area". I tried this for Preston & it came up with a few handy websites.
Had my first day fishing on Saturday, (couldn't make Thursday) & thought I'd try one of my local day ticket lakes, (Turbary Fisery at Whitestake) Although there's lots of carp & tench, there's lots of silvers in here & I thought it might be a bit early for the carp. What a turn up! Didn't have a single small roach or bream, (very unusual for Turbary) but had a 3lb F1 carp Followed by an 8lb common. As I was only on 3lb line & a 16 hook it was a cracking fight - well made up! So guys, it loooks like the fish are starting to feed, let's get out there among them!

Hi there, came across this site while on the football rumours. I have just started fishing and last year had some success free lining live sand eels for bass on a very cheap reel. I have just invested in a rod but would anyone be able to advise me on what sort of reel I should be looking at for general sea spinning and float fishing. I've just started to ledger for whiting too. Is there a reel which would be an all rounder or should I invest in two? Cheers

(0)
(1)

Hello mate. I found the site via football rumours as well. As far as your question goes, even though I do only coarse fishing, I would advise you to spend the maximum you can afford as far as reels are concerned. I've just had to bin a Shakespeare freespool reel I've only used a handful of times. I thought it was a bargain when I bought it but it was useless. What I tend to do now is google "fishing reel reviews" & you can get links to several sites where anglers post reviews of the tackle they have bought, (both good & bad!). Amazon have a decent page for tackle reviews as well. The old saying seems to be true when it comes to reels -"You get what you pay for".
Hope this helps. Toffee Tezza.

(0)
(1)

Thanks for your reply, I have taken what you have said and now have more of a knowledge of what to buy. However the sizes of the reels etc are still a bit confusing, I'm sure I can work may way round that. I'm looking at fixed spool reels but am confused about bearings? can anybody fill me in?

(0)
(1)

If you are looking for more info on reels,a good site to go onto is the Angling times one. There are loads of reviews on reels etc. I started fishing again about 4 years ago,and have used this site to learn/recap on just about anything. Also they have some very good offers on tackle if you subscribe to the newsletter.

hello everyone happy new year just found this wee thread while looking at some football stuff

iam from glasgow started of fishing in 2009 after stopping drinking and needed something to do in my spare time i started of on the cannal maggots sweetcorn caught nothing was winter 2009 , got to cold and the cannal froze over
after watching some fishing on shed over winter 2009 i went and bought a cheap fly rod combo and waited for the star of the trout year 2010 on the river about 45 mins walk away mid march i caught my first ever fish a small trout on the fly was over the moon it was now mid july and i started to see loads more guys fishing and one day i seen a guy with i huge salmon witch i never knew was in there so downed the trout gear got a spinning rod
and a salmon fisher man was born lol
had never seen a wild fish in real life that
big until that day. it changed me for the better as i then went on to catch 9 salmon biggest on the flying c from july to end october 2010 biggest was 15 lbs was it all luck ?

2011 i was itching to get started after all the fishing stuff the guys had told me about the river so at the start of the year
was down fishing the lower reaches of the river as the salmon are not up at my other place until at least end of june so i was after a rare spring salmon and caught one on the 14 may 12lbs on black flying c after that i went on to catch 10 salmon for the year beating my 9 from the year before that was my aim not bad for a rookie eh lads

have some pics of my salmon i will post them if anyone wants to see them
p.s cant wait for spring 2012
! LET ME AT THE SPRINGERS !

(6)
(1)

Hi there do you fish the kelvin im from stirling was fishing this river had 2 salmon in the same day was very impressed, going try fish it again at some point this year..

(0)
(0)

Yes its the river kelvin i fish cracking river
for the money , plus there is no private beats , for £40 a season i dont think you will get a better deal, i would say about half of the river is un fished so you get alot of water and adventure for the money i found few pools that where un fished and are now producing i have fish it top to bottom this year trying new places , i must admit all the salmon i have caught ans seen this year biggest majority of them averaged about 10lbs with the odd 15lbs 18 lbs and a guy got one on the fly was about 22lbs , there was loads of grilse last year but never seen to many this year and they where late i only caught 3 grilse out my 10 and rest where doubles lots of bigger fish this year ,

(0)
(0)

I was speaking to a friend of my mine that told me it was in the top 10 salmon rivers in Scotland,, , it even was suposed to have done better than the tays tributery the erecht.. Will hopefully get down to fish it this year ,,i cought 2 on tobi which were returned,, last season there at a place called torrance you might know it if you fish the river all the time. is it only £40 a season thats amazing for a river off its quality..

(1)
(1)

Yea i know torrance well ,i fish abit futher down blamore/allander stretch is the more
popular part guys just tend to go there but i like to get out and look for parts unfished aswell , i have only ever fished one other river it was the river teith so i cant really judge the kelvin vs other rivers
all the guys i have met on the kelvin over the last 2 years have told me its geting better and better each year as for sea trout i caught one it was about 3lbs and i good few were lost by others while salmon fishing dont think meny fish for tem but talk was there was more seen this year than last few years , yeah £40is a great deal i think its maby down to the fact it runs right through middle of glasgow

(0)
(0)

You fish th river teith , i fish that aswell , cought a 23lber on the fly last season. yea you cant knock £40 for a full season thtas amazing wish i lived that close to a river that cheap. sea trout arent like they used to be as in the runs very few rivers get a s**t load of runs , although the annan i hear is a great sea trout water..might get a couple of fishing days on the kelvin this year give it ago again..

Went down to my local fishery yesterday, you usually have to get there early to get a place, not a soul, only me all day.Used a method feeder, with pellet, boilies, sweetcorn and luncheon meat, not a bite all morning.Found half a plain baguette that had been in my keepnet bag side pocket since early November(rock hard),and threw a piece in.Within a minute or so,it had been swallowed up.I spent a brilliant afternoon fishing on the top, with my best fish,a 12lb common carp.I never expected to catch anything on the top in mid winter.
Essexgooner Happy new year.

(2)
(0)

Well done, mate! That's what I love about fishing - you just never know what's going to happen. It's weird about baits too. Sometimes the fish will ignore everything apart from one bait. One day last summer, at one of my local day ticket waters, couldn't get a touch on maggot, corn, pellet or prawn. Tried a bit of wholegrain seeded bread & they went crackers, (no pun intended!) Told the owner when he came round for the money, how awkward & picky his fish were. He told me it was his fault....he'd stocked with all female fish!
Toffee Tezza

(1)
(0)

Nice one,I think the answer is if you are going out to a day ticket water, its best to take as many baits as possible, don't be afraid to try different things, and always keep a handful of dog mixer in your kit.
Essexgooner Happy new year.

dont know anything about fishing , but can anyone tell me whats the best way to cook nice white fish , thanks ............lfc

(0)

It can depend on the fish mate but you can't go far wrong if you head, tail and gut it then stuff it with preferred fillings ie: leeks, celery, maybe even mushrooms or onion, a splash of White wine then wrap in foil and bake in the oven. Careful not to overcook. Hope this helps

Is it true i can fish for pike all year long?

wildwelshman

(0)
(0)

I'm not trying to put a downer on it for you, but mid-winter is probably the worst time to try for carp - they seem to go into a kind of hibernation. Give it until late March &, as the weather warms up, the carp become more active.
I don't know what type of gear you are getting, but don't make the mistake of thinking you've got to hurl your rig as far as possible to catch fish. My best carp have been taken just feet from the bank. I've posted a photo on the site of a ghost carp I caught last May. This was on float fished prawn just 18 inches from the bank! Talking about bait, & a lot of the dedicated carp lads who read these pages will disagree with me, but I find it a bit of a struggle to get tham on boilies & pelletts. It's worth trying worm, prawn & bread, particularly on well fished day ticket waters.
Hope this is of some use to you. Enjoy your fishing.

Are any of you other fishing guys getting a bit p****d off with the accuracy of the weather forecasts we're getting lately? It doesn't matter where, TV, radio or internet, they don't seem to have any idea. My mate & I picked Thursday for our fishing day this week, because the forecast said, "Dry, cloudy & not much wind". Sounded OK, so off we went....& what did we get? - mega-heavy showers interspersed with bright sunshine & gusty winds! Made the fishing difficult &, to make things worse, Friday, which they said would be an unsettled, windy day was perfect for fishing! Aaaargggghhhhh!!!

Hampton springs is great but doesn't, have a tackle shop. I go to Cheshire fishings shop first as it's only 10 mins away in car.

Hi Guys,

Am looking for a nice venue where i take the missus. Would need accomodation in the form of log cabin, cottage etc. Ideally private lake but don't mind if not. Went to Wildmore Waters in the cotsolds this time last year but is very pricey and not much action ( doesn't bother me but the missus got bored ). Be nice to hear of any places you guys have been.

Cheers

I know this isn't what you're really after but why not take the missus down to weymouth? Couple of nights in a nice hotel and a day sea fishing on a charter boat, lovely place and the best, most diverse fishing anywhere in the UK. I can recommend a top skipper too if you decide to try it

Cheers fpr the suggestion Chris. Being primarily a course fisherman I have always wanted to try sea fishing and missed the chance when was in cornwall a couple of summers ago due to bad weather. When I was in the Canaries last summer got my chance to go shark, barakuda and general deep sea fishing. What a mistake, wont be getting on a boat in a hurry again. Although myself and the girlfriend did catch a few nice fish, I was constantly, and i mean constantly throwing up for 5 hours! Not got sea legs i'm afraid. Nice of you to suggest though, cheers.

I occasionally suffer and I have a few mates who get sea sick and trust me they get it bad but a couple of sea sickness tablets before they go (I recommend Stugeron) and they are absolutely fine. I think it'd be worth trying again with the aid of some tablets especially out of Weymouth where this year I have had, cod, bass, turbot, brill, plaice, black bream, gilthead bream, pollock, gurnard, whiting, mackerel, conger and John dory. The bass are showing up at the moment and if you decide to try it I can highly recommend Fish-On! Skippered by Josh Simmonds. The best skipper I've ever been out with and I've been sea fishing for 30 years all around the country.

Been fishing Lemington Lakes in Glos this summer. Great carp and in excellent condition, they have a few rules but judging by the fish you can see why.

Looked at fishing there end of last summer but didn't get around to it. Is it Lemington or Leamington or are they different venues. Cheers
